From Forbes, "The commercial surrogacy industry is experiencing a global boom expected to reach $129 billion by 2032, exponentially higher than its estimated 2022 value of $14 billion, according to Global Market Insights, led by growing infertility cases, more same sex couples looking to have children and heightened awareness about reproductive options thanks to celebrity endorsers and an increasing number of fertility clinics." In traditional surrogacy the surrogate doubles as the egg donor and is the biological mother of the baby she is carrying; the embryos are created using sperm from the intended father or a donor in a process called intrauterine insemination (IUI).
Gestational surrogacy, however is when a person carries and gives birth to a baby for another person or couple. The person who is emplanted with the embryo has no genetic relation to the baby. Generally, the emplant is conducted through a process called IVF (in vitro fertilization).
For many factors, emotional, mental, physical and legal, gestational surrogacy has become the more popular option for Intended Parents and Surrogates alike.
Choosing to become a surrogate is a big commitment lasting a year or longer on average. With the time commitment, toll on your body and many other factors, you might be asking why would someone want to be a surrogate? Like everything else in this world, there is never just one answer, so here are 5 reasons women become surrogates.
One. Giving a gift like no other.
Many women choose to carry a baby for an intended parent or parents simply because giving the gift of a child is unlike anything most people get to experience in life. Some people are lucky enough to have witnessed a friend complete a surrogate journey and experience the pure joy it brought to an intended parent; some of these women become surrogates because they witnessed that journey.
Two. Understanding the challenges of infertility.
One in six couples experiences infertility, which makes it incredibly likely that you or someone you know is going through this battle. Many women choose to become surrogates because they know someone who has struggled or is currently struggling with infertility. Even if they are not carrying a child for a person they know, it can be a very rewarding experience to be a surrogate for another intended parent.
Three. Giving back.
This is a simple one, and honestly it might seem a little basic, but many women learn about surrogacy and view it as an opportunity to help someone in need. They recognize the joys of being a parent, and they want everyone to share those same joys!
Four. Family is complete.
One of the most common reasons that women become surrogates is because they have had healthy pregnancies, and they feel that their family is complete. As long as she meets the health and age requirements, she can become a surrogate.
Five. Financial incentive.
While a lot of people will immediately assume that financial incentive is a big factor in becoming a surrogate, it is often viewed as a bonus to the real reason someone is choosing to carry for an intended parent or parents. As previously mentioned, becoming a surrogate is a commitment in many ways. Choosing to dedicate a year or more of your life to help another person become a parent is no small task, and clearly surrogates deserve to be compensated for their time.
In closing, I would like to share the story of how Little Miracle Surrogacy came to be.
This company began in our hearts several years ago through a mutual friend. Several of us lived in the same apartment building, so as you can imagine, with 24/7 access just down the hallway, we quickly built relationships through our pets, children, group dinners, pool days, etc.
Our friend began a journey as a surrogate for a wonderful family, and through her experience many of us were inspired. One of our founders was so inspired by the ability to give such a gift, that in 2018 she became a surrogate, carrying and delivering twins.
After this experience, we knew that it was only a matter of time before we ventured into ownership of our own company.
This dream was made a reality in 2022 when three women passionate about helping others joined forces to launch Little Miracles Surrogacy. We believe that family is for everyone and that the strongest relationships are built on trust and communication. We believe in delivering unparalleled customer service.
We understand that couples or individuals struggling with infertility may be mentally and physically exhausted from months or years of pregnancy obstacles, and we are ready to walk through EVERY step of the surrogacy process with our clients.
