The pregnancy test is positive. The embryo has implanted. The surrogate is officially pregnant—and for intended parents, this moment is filled with joy, relief, and a new kind of waiting.

So what happens now?

⏳ The Waiting Phase

Once pregnancy is confirmed, intended parents enter a phase of anticipation. It’s a time to celebrate, but also to prepare emotionally and practically for the months ahead.

Here’s what this stage looks like:

  • Monitoring continues: The surrogate will have follow-up bloodwork and ultrasounds to confirm the pregnancy is progressing. You’ll receive updates from your agency or clinic, often including early heartbeat scans and milestone reports.

  • Prenatal care begins: Around 10–12 weeks, the surrogate transitions from the fertility clinic to her OB provider. This marks the beginning of routine pregnancy care.

💡 What Intended Parents Can Do While They Wait

Waiting doesn’t mean standing still. Here are meaningful ways intended parents can stay engaged and prepare:

  • Build your support system: Whether it’s family, friends, or a counselor, surround yourself with people who understand the emotional journey of surrogacy.

  • Prepare your home: Begin thinking about nursery plans, baby gear, and the kind of environment you want to create.

  • Stay connected: Many surrogates appreciate thoughtful messages, milestone celebrations, or shared updates. Your agency can help guide the tone and frequency of communication.

  • Educate yourself: Read up on newborn care, parenting styles, and post-birth bonding. This is a great time to attend classes or join support groups.

  • Plan for delivery: Start thinking about travel arrangements, hospital preferences, and what kind of birth experience you hope to share.

📜 Legal Steps During Pregnancy

Even though contracts were signed before transfer, there are still legal milestones to complete during pregnancy:

  • Parentage paperwork: Depending on your state, your legal team may begin preparing documents to establish your parental rights. This could include pre-birth orders, post-birth filings, or other court documents.

  • Hospital coordination: Your agency and legal team will work with the hospital to ensure your names are listed correctly, your wishes are respected, and the birth plan is clear.

  • Insurance and benefits: Any updates to insurance coverage or newborn benefits may be handled during this time, especially if your child will be added to your policy.

Your agency will guide you through these steps, ensuring everything is in place well before delivery day.

💛 A Time of Quiet Joy

This phase is quieter than the whirlwind of matching, screening, and transfer—but it’s no less meaningful. It’s a time to reflect, prepare, and deepen the connection to the journey you’re on.
